What is Embassy Legalization?

Embassy Legalization vs. Apostille

In one of our previous articles we discussed an Apostille and explained how to obtain one on your documents. Today we’d like to explain the embassy legalization, an alternative method of authenticating a document, used for countries that are not members of the Hague Convention (see table below)

Countries which never signed the Apostille Convention do not accept or recognize an apostille as a certificate of authenticity for public documents issued in the USA.
Instead, the embassy, consular or diplomatic representative of the country in these countries legalizes and attests the documents. In most cases an Embassy Legalization will require the document to be notarized by the public notary (depending upon country of issuance), followed by authentication from the Secretary of State, the foreign affairs office i.e., US State Department, etc.. and finally the embassy of the proper country in the country of origin to which the document will be sent.
