Apostille documents for marriage in Greece

If you or your spouse – to – be is a U.S. citizen and you’ve been entertaining the idea of having a marriage registration in Greece followed by a romantic wedding and honeymoon at the sea side of Aegean, Mediterranean or Ionian Sea, you will need the following documents:

  1. U.S.  Passport or other travel document
  2. Birth certificate, authenticated and apostilled with an official translation into Greek language (for a party to the marriage who was not born in Greece). The Apostille on the Birth Certificate must be obtained in the United States, the country where the document was issued.
  3. Affidavit of Single Status or Certificate of Non – Impediment (if available in the state of your residence), stating that you are free to marry, i.e. you are not married at this moment or, if you has been married before, your marriage was ended by the decision on its dissolution granted by a competent court.
  4. Ιf applicable, apostilled proof of the previous marriage (marriages) termination – spouse’s death certificate or final/irrevocable judgment of divorce (with the Certificate of Non – Appeal) with an official translation from English into Greek language.
  5. If both parties are foreign citizens, each shall submit a separate set of documents.

The said documents shall be presented in person at the City Hall (Δημαρχείο) or President of the Community (Πρόεδρος Κινωτίτος) where the marriage will take place.

For the purpose of solemnizing of the marriage in Greece, the original birth certificate and Affidavit of Single Status or Certificate of Non – Impediment are a must. Notarized copies are not accepted. The said documents shall bear an apostille certificate under the Apostille Convention adopted in 1961 and translation into Greek completed by a certified translation agency.

The procedure for RELIGIOUS marriages are the same except that a priest and a church will ask for additional documents such as Baptism Certificate.
